There’s nothing quite like the feeling of wearing a brand new dinner jacket to a black tie event. The dinner jacket is the epitome of formal elegance, the crowning jewel in every man’s wardrobe. In a sea of men wearing tuxedos, you’ll need to look as sharp as possible: not a single scuff on your lapel, or a cufflink out of place.

The dinner jacket is correct black tie attire. You will be required to wear a black or midnight blue dinner jacket with either peaked or shawl lapels. You can choose from either single, or double breasted – although double breasted is most flattering on very slim men.

We stock a range of classic black dinner jackets, from designer labels such as Espirit, Carl Gross and Lambretta, in addition to our own affordable fashion brand Alexander Dobell. Our in-house designers travel to fashion show cases across the globe to find inspiration for their pieces and bring high end fashion to every man.

The most common color for a dinner jacket is black. This creates an attractive contrast with the white dress shirt – the iconic look of the tuxedo. However, in the 1930s wealthy Americans travelling to foreign climes decided to shake tradition up by introducing the white dinner jacket. They wanted a way to dress formally at evening dinners without over-heating in the heavy fabrics of traditional tuxedos of the time. Although black dinner jackets come in much lighter fabrics nowadays, the white tuxedo is still a popular choice aesthetically in tropical climates and on cruises. It is also a popular choice in the summer – many gentlemen opt for the white dinner jacket at open-air events such as summer country club dances and yacht parties.

Your dinner jacket can be worn with a dress shirt, high waisted black pants and either a vest or a cummerbund. Cummerbunds are excellent for warmer weather as they simply wrap around the waist, whereas a vest covers your torso and will keep you warm in cooler climates.

As your trousers will not have belt loops, you are advised to keep them secure with a pair of suspenders. Polish off your evening wear with a pair of cufflinks and some patent formal shoes.
